Holter monitoring
A Holter monitor records your heartbeat continuously while you go about your normal life. At Medcare in Bongaigaon, we use a small disposable patch Holter that sticks to the chest and records for 3 days, and can be extended to around 10 days or, when needed, up to a month. It is used to find the cause of palpitations, dizziness or fainting that a short ECG may miss. You do not need to be admitted.
At a glance
- What it is: a small, wire-free patch that records every heartbeat
- Wear time: 72 hours as standard, extendable to about 10 days, and up to 1 month if needed
- Daily life: carry on with work, sleep and normal activity
- Why longer helps: symptoms that come every few days are often missed by a standard 24-hour Holter
- Who it helps: palpitations, dizziness, fainting, unexplained stroke, and checking rhythm on certain medicines
- At Medcare: fitting, removal, report reading and explanation by Dr. Das
Why wear a Holter
A standard ECG records about 10 seconds of heartbeat. If your symptoms come and go, the ECG is often normal on the day of your visit. A Holter records every beat for days, so it is far more likely to capture what happens when you feel unwell.
It can show:
- Fast, slow or irregular rhythms, including atrial fibrillation
- Pauses in the heartbeat
- Extra beats and how often they occur
- Whether your symptoms match a rhythm problem, or not
What happens at Medcare
- Consultation. Dr. Das asks about your symptoms and decides how long you need to wear the patch.
- Fitting. The chest skin is cleaned and the patch is stuck on, usually on the left side of the chest. It takes about 10 minutes.
- At home. You carry on with normal life. Note down the time and what you felt whenever you have symptoms, or press the patch button if it has one.
- Return. You remove the patch as instructed, or come back to have it removed, and return it to the clinic.
- Results. The recording is analysed, and Dr. Das explains the findings and next steps.

Patch Holter compared with a standard Holter
| Patch Holter at Medcare | Standard 24-hour Holter | |
|---|---|---|
| Wires | None | Several wires to a box |
| Wear time | 3 days, extendable | Usually 24 to 48 hours |
| Daily life | Normal routine, sleep easily | Wires can disturb sleep and work |
| Chance of catching symptoms | Higher, because recording is longer | Lower if symptoms are not daily |
Tips while wearing the patch
- Avoid soaking the patch: a quick shower is usually fine, but no bathing in a tub or swimming
- Do not apply lotion or oil near the patch
- Keep a symptom diary with times
- Avoid strong magnets and electric blankets near the patch
- If the skin becomes very itchy or sore, call the clinic
When to see a doctor urgently
Call 108 or 112 if you faint, have chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a racing heartbeat with dizziness or near-fainting. Do not wait for your Holter results.
FAQs
Will I need to stay in hospital for a Holter test?
No. The patch is fitted at the clinic in about 10 minutes, and you go home and continue your normal routine. You can work, walk, sleep and do most daily activities while it records.
Why wear it for 3 days or more instead of 24 hours?
Many rhythm problems do not happen every day. Recording for several days, and longer when needed, gives a much better chance of capturing the rhythm during your symptoms, so the diagnosis is clearer and repeat tests are less likely.
Can I bathe with the patch on?
Most patch monitors allow a quick shower, but should not be soaked in a bath or pool. Pat the area dry gently. Dr. Das will give you the exact instructions for the patch you are given.
What if I have no symptoms while wearing it?
That is still useful information. The recording shows your heart rhythm throughout the period, including during sleep. If symptoms are rare, Dr. Das may suggest a longer recording.
Is a Holter useful after a stroke?
Yes. Some strokes are caused by an irregular rhythm called atrial fibrillation, which can come and go. Longer recording can find it, and finding it changes treatment to prevent another stroke.
